52 gallery (2013)

The following 52 solar etched prints, of Montezuma Bald Cypress trees found at Fairmount Park in Riverside CA, were shown in the “52” exhibition at the Riverside Art Museum from October 3 2013 to January 5 2014. They are editions of 25 except for Tree 52 which is an edition of 52.

Solar etching is a method of printmaking using a steel plate with a light-sensitive polymer coating. This non-toxic process, developed by Dan Weldon in the early 70’s gives you a copper etched looking image with out the use of chemicals. You start with an image …transfer it to a transparent film…this film is then placed on the solar plate and put in a light box for a couple of minutes. The polymer will harden any place that UV light touches the plate, while unexposed areas remain soft and water soluble. After the plate is exposed, the image is developed by rinsing the plate with water. The final step in preparing the plate for printing is to re-harden it in the sun for about 10 minutes.(information from Dan Weldon and McClain’s sites)
